A Personal Note
to Couples from Rob
Jackson -
I think it's safe to say that
none of us imagined the highs and lows that we've experienced as a result
of our marriages. Many of us were simply not aware that we had the life
experiences that correlate with sex addiction and coaddiction
[relationship with an addict].
As Christians I think the
issues of sexual exploitation, trauma, addiction, and coaddiction are
especially shame producing until we begin to open us to a few safe people
who are gracious and understanding. The support of a caring community of a
few, makes such a difference.
I've worked with couples
contemplating marriage, having just returned from the disastrous
honeymoons, and in every stage of marriage and remarriage thereafter. I've
seen both young and old try to contend with sex addiction, and I've
learned the following from their experiences.
-
You can't beat this
addiction on your own.
-
Shame delays recovery and
always has to be processed in light of God's truth.
-
Initially most addicts
piecemeal their confessions in a best effort to preserve the
relationship.
-
Initially most coaddicts
believe they're responsible for the addict's condition, and many try
to govern the recovery process.
-
Couples find little help
from local churches.
-
Most couples hardly know
who to trust and how to find a qualified service provider.
-
Both addict and coaddict
have comparable developmental issues and family of origin issues to
process.
-
Many couples want to apply
their faith in Christ to the marital discord, but don't really know
how to.
At ChristianCounsel.com we're
committed to restoring marriages. We want to help you through the recovery
process and pray that Christ gives you individually and collectively the
inner transformation beyond the addiction. If you contact us, I believe we
can help. We want to be a part of your essential community. I'm certain
that God honors biblical approaches to healing and reconciliation. I hope
to hear from you soon.
Blessings,
