A Personal Note
to Pastors from Rob
Jackson -
Through the years of service
to churches and pastors, I've come to appreciate the load you carry. I
recognize that the pastor's role is multivaried, and can change with each
individual's need.
Most pastors I've met report
several things in common:
(1) In spite of their
concerns for a parishioner, they can typically "counsel"
with someone only about three or four times before they have to make a
referral. I've heard, and believe, that pastors are capable of
counseling to the church body from the pulpit, so that preaching and
teaching of God's Word remains their primary calling.
(2) They realize the needs
presented by families impacted by sexual trauma and/or addiction are
legion in their complexities. Beyond the time restraints produced by
pastoral demands, seminary training has not typically prepared the
pastor to resolve trauma related, compulsive issues.
(3) The issue of sexuality
poses significant liabilities to the pastor and church.
(4) Most pastors lack the
high degree of accountability and support staff to safely provide
counseling services to adolescents of the opposite sex.
On the other hand, many
pastors have indicated how difficult it is to find a mental health
professional or agency they trust. I've heard and recognize the following
concerns:
(1) The success of the
referral is a reflection on me and an extension of my pastoral care.
Therefore I have to be confident that the teaching and therapy will be
consistent with our common faith and traditions.
(2) I don't want to see this
family divided by a therapist who recommends separation or divorce as a
first option.
With these needs and concerns
in mind, I want to assure you that I am personally committed to serving
you and your church as needs present themselves. My mission includes a
strong commitment to work with churches so that a large community of
wounded people can find spiritual and psychological rest in a personal,
relevant relationship with Christ. Frankly, I'm aware of how much
ministries like mine need the input and help of local churches. It's my
prayer that we can work together to restore individuals and families to
the glory of God.
I trust you will
feel free to
contact me at 888.891.HOPE. Let's support one another in the cause of Christ.
Blessings,
Rob
